The 10 best events in Wandsworth and south London this August

Our round up of August’s best events in Wandsworth covers everything from family fun and memory making to bugs in Battersea – and if neither floats your boat, we’ve got the latest food and drink openings in south London to whet your appetite.

Unwanted Memory Bank, Wandsworth
Looking for ways to keep the kids entertained this August? Drop into one of the family workshops at the Pump House Gallery, where children can experiment with writing, drawing and publishing. The workshops accompany an exhibition entitled Zadie Xa: The Conch, Sea Urchin and Brass Bell, which invites visitors to think about the value we place on objects and memories. This is a chance to spend time together as a family, exploring memoires and the things that matter to you. 3 August – 24 September, pumphousegallery.org.uk

Frankenstein: Scratch, Battersea
Fans of Mary Shelley’s monster – and beatboxing – will love this adaptation from the BAC Beatbox Academy. A gig-theatre-beatbox hybrid, this production brings Frankenstein bang up to date, nearly 200 years after Shelley’s novel was published, using soundscape, song and physical theatre to create something that is truly special. 4-5 August, bac.org.uk

BIAZA Big Bug Bonanza Day, Battersea
Another Wandsworth event for your little ones: get down and dirty with the creepy crawlies at Battersea Park Zoo’s bug bonanza, hosted by the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA). After coming face to face with the little critters, you can listen to bug-themed stories, make bug puppets, colour bugs in and take a bug-themed quiz. Insectophobes might want to give this one a miss but your kids will love it.
8-10 August, batterseaparkzoo.co.uk

Sunday Bank Holiday Brass with Full Tilt!, Battersea
Turn on your ooo, pull on your dancing shoes and shimmy down to The Magic Garden this August Bank Holiday for the raucous rock-come-reggae of Full Tilt, a brass heavy 9 piece originating from South London. Their sound is a mish mash of funk, soul and afrobeat so you’re in for an energetic night… and a very slow Monday morning.

Zipworld London, Lambeth
If you don’t like height, or speed, or the feeling that you are risking your life then Zip World is probably not for you. And that’s OK. For everyone else, a 35ft high zip wire has just opened in Archbishop’s Park, which will send you hurtling past London’s iconic landmarks at speeds of up to 50mph. Book now.

No 29 Power Station West, Battersea
The revamp of Battersea Power Station continues apace with the opening of No 29 Power station West, a pub from the number-loving team behind Clapham’s No 32 The Old Town. Expect a neighbourhood bar with a ‘utilitarian feel’ (leather, tiling and hand-crafted furniture) and over 30 wines and 20 beers to choose from, plus an extensive cocktail list – make ours a Watermelon Sour.

Minnow, Clapham
After years with only grilled meat and McDonald’s on the local menu, Clapham’s culinary scene has upped its game of late. The latest addition is Minnow, an eaterie that serves breakfast, brunch and dinner from its prime location on The Pavement. Dishes are divided into Sea, Meat and Veg, with chargrilled baby octopus and beef shin taking centre stage. A small but well formed cocktail list culminates with an eponymous mixture of gin, honey and Italicus Bergamotto.

South West Four
Dance fest SW4 is as much a part of Clapham culture as the common, or Infernos, or that chicken shop that was on TV for a bit. Pendulum, Tinie Tempah and Deadmaus are headlining this year, but Saturday has sold out so be quick for Sunday tickets. Bring your glow sticks and pray it doesn’t rain.
