Members of a London coworking office jumping in the air

A year in a London coworking office

Celebrity deaths, international crises, a gorilla on the loose… 2016 has been written off by many as one of the worst years on record. But has it really been all bad? Inside our London coworking office, we have fundraised, networked, celebrated and won awards, proving that this ‘annus’ wasn’t quite so ‘horribilies’ after all.

January

We may have been suffering from post-Christmas blues, miserable weather and the strain of dry January, but members returned to the office ready for another year of personal and professional success.

Good news from the international community included the International Atomic Energy Agency’s announcement that Iran had adequately dismantled its nuclear weapons program. The UN immediately lifted sanctions, and the world felt like a slightly safer place.

FEBRUARY

Ah, February the month of love. Leonardo Di Caprio finally won his very first Oscar at the 88th Academy Awards, which was almost as notable as a group of Le Bureau members winning a pub quiz at The Goat in Battersea.

MARCH

Spring had yet to officially be sprung but it didn’t stop our members heading out for a Spring Social (and a very ‘social’ evening it was too) at The Victoria on Queenstown Road. Many thanks to landlord Steve for continuing to put up with our antics.

Elsewhere, an innovative combined drug therapy was showed to slow the spread of breast cancer.

APRIL

Le Bureau received a visit from South London Procurement who advised members on how their business could become a supplier to the Shell Centre re-development. A session with the University of Roehampton gave members information on the university’s intern programme and the benefits of taking an intern on.

April was also the month when the WWF announced that the world’s population of tigers was up for the first time in a century.

MAY

Changes to the pension scheme looked set to impact small businesses the country over. Le Bureau’s then resident James Dare of St James’s Place Wealth Management provided members with an overview of the changes and the implications for their business.

A vending machine was installed downstairs, a popcorn machine arrived in the kitchen and Le Bureau held a cake sale in aid of the Stroke Association, proving once and for all what a tasty proposition our London coworking office really is.

The Leicester City fans amongst our ranks celebrated the blues’ ‘sporting miracle’ as they won the Premier League.

JUNE

The shock result of the Brexit referendum rocked the nation, including many Le Bureau members who have dealings in Europe.

Our very own Magda G swapped our London coworking office for the streets of Southampton where she took part in a 5k Race for Life to raise a phenomenal £435 for Cancer Research UK.

JULY

With Wimbledon just down the road, it wasn’t long before tennis fever had gripped the office. Many of our members took the opportunity to spend an afternoon on the courts and for those who couldn’t get away from their desks, there was two weeks of Pimms and strawberries and cream to enjoy on Friday. A little-known  Scottish player called Andy Murray lifted the champion’s trophy.

In India, 800,000 volunteers worked for 24 hours to plant 43.9 million tree saplings.

AUGUST

The 2016 Olympics were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Team GB arrived back on home soil with a total of 67 medals – two of which belonged to cyclist Laura Trott, who consequently became Britain’s most successful female Olympian.

We may have been almost 6,000 miles from Rio here in our London coworking space but it didn’t stop us getting in on the carnival spirit. Lycra-clad Le Bureau members gathered on Clapham Common for an evening of sporting prowess (and a lot of beer) at the Le Bureau London Coworking Olympics.

SEPTEMBER

Energy was on the menu in September.  Le Bureau members had already been enjoying lunch courtesy of Battersea-based food delivery service Eatupp for months when we caught up with Eatupp‘s Beth Thayne to find out how the company keeps its costs and carbon emission to a minimum whilst maintaining high quality, tasty food.

Overseas, the US and China – the countries who together are responsible for 40% of the world’s carbon emission – both ratified the Paris global climate agreement.

OCTOBER

October heralded another bake sale in our increasingly sweet coworking office which raised yet more vital funds for Cancer Research UK. The temperature may have dropped outside but inside we were getting tropical at Le Bureau’s inaugural speed networking luau (surely a first for any London coworking space). It proved a hit with members who got to network whilst sipping a selection of cool cocktails.

Our hearts were further warmed to hear that new tests were proving successful in the treatment of HIV.

NOVEMBER

Le Bureau was honoured to partner TedxWandsworth. Office managers Kinga, Magda G, Valeria and Magda S, as well as member Rosy Edwards, represented Le Bureau at the event and were treated to a day of inspirational talks that covered everything from personal achievement to innovations in the treatment of autism.

In the US, Donald Trump was elected as the 45th President of the United States.

DECEMBER

The Le Bureau Christmas party has been the highlight of the month this December:  members donned their glad rags and partied the night away at The Imperial in Fulham and Bunga Bunga.

The celebrations continued as Le Bureau were awarded Entrepreneur of the Year at the Wandsworth Business Awards 2016 while Le Bureau residents Wandsworth Oasis took home the gong for Best Green  Business. A festive book give-away offered members a few extra presents for the little people in their lives and raised money for Great Ormond Street.

So what will 2017 have in store? We look forward to seeing back at Le Bureau in January for more events, successes and perhaps a few tipples thrown in too.

Wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.
