NOMINATE YOUR HERO FOR THE WANDSWORTH CIVIC AWARDS

When Bonnie Tyler famously sung about her need for a hero, she forgot to mention that as well as being strong, fast and fresh from the fight, they should also be from Wandsworth.

Entries for the 2016 Wandsworth Civic Awards are now open and residents (and non-residents) are being encouraged to nominate individuals that have gone above and beyond in their service to the borough of Wandsworth.

The awards shine a spotlight on unsung local heroes and recognise contributions in a variety of areas such as volunteering, community work, helping neighbours and carrying out an exceptional act of bravery.

The Le Bureau co-work space seeks to have a positive impact in Wandsworth and the surrounding areas, both through its affiliation with local organisations and its members charitable efforts. In the past few months alone, members have walked, cycled and baked their way to incredible fundraising targets. Could a Wandsworth hero be here within our office?

Amongst 2015’s winners was Venessa Bob, founder of A Second Voice, a charity that offers advice and support to parents and guardians of children with autism. Bob was inspired by her own son to start the charity, which uses workshops, social media and group sessions to raise awareness and understanding of the condition across all sections of the community.

Also in the winners’ line up was Antony Croker Poole, who was honoured for his long-standing service to crime prevention. He has worked with people of all ages throughout Wandsworth and set up the Battersea Summer Scheme to keep young people away from crime. Were that not enough, for the past 20 years Antony has organised the Battersea Police Ball, an event that sees 1,600 people attend annually and has so far raised more than a million pounds for crime prevention projects in Wandsworth, Battersea and Balham.

If you already have a Wandsworth hero in mind, you can nominate them here, providing the nominee’s name, phone number and email address, plus your name and contact details, and the reasons why they deserve an award.

Deadline for nominations closes on October 12, 2016.
