What’s On: July

From street parties to rock-fests and some pre-Edinburgh laughs, swap your hot desk for the hottest events around Battersea this July

Wimbledon
Forget your Glastos and keep your garden parties; July means one thing, and that’s Wimbledon. It’s time to don your shades, load up on strawberries and turn your head this way and that for two weeks of first-class tennis in one of the world’s most prestigious sporting venues. If you missed out on tickets, head to Murray’s eponymous mound and pray for another GB win (as well as some sunshine). He’ll have to get past Djokovic first, though; the Serbian champ is returning to defend his title and is said to be on cracking form.

4th July
You don’t have to be American to celebrate Independence Day – but around these parts, it certainly helps. At Blues Kitchen in Brixton, there’s special ribs, apple pie sundaes and live Bluegrass on offer, plus free booze for Americans who bring along their passports. Clapham’s Honky Tonk bar is going all-out, dedicating an entire weekend to festivities and decking out the bar in stars and stripes. Up at the South Bank, Sea Containers at Mondarin London will be serving hotdogs and Oreo milkshakes to the strains of an authentic American band.

Secret Summer Party
For 364 days of the year, Clapham’s Landor Road is an elegant residential street. But for one day in July, it transforms into a vibrant carnival to a soundtrack of world-class Cuban music. Dine on Valcie’s renowned jerk chicken before hitting the D Vine Cellar wine and beer stall for some adult refreshment. There are also plenty of family activities on offer if you’re coming with little ones in tow.

Streatham Festival
This year is the 15th anniversary of the Streatham Festival and to mark the occasion, it is celebrating all things local. Join the Streatham Strut and discover the area’s best musicians and gig venues; get all the LOLs at the festival’s very own comedy gala then take in an outdoor screening of a crowd-pleasing movie. Those looking for something a bit more active can kick up their heels at Folk of the Woods’ cracking ceilidh. The last day is Family Fun Day, with live performances and craft stalls to keep kids suitably entertained.

Groundhog Day
If you haven’t seen the movie Groundhog Day (as if), go and watch it immediately – then book tickets to the Old Vic’s brand new, musical version.  Artistic Director Matthew Warchus takes the helm to tell the story of Phil Connors, a cynical weatherman who is forced to live the same day, every day, over and over again. If the thought of a live musical production of this cult classic isn’t enough, the superlative Tim Minchin is writing the lyrics. Book now.

Un Rêve – An Evening of Cabaret
Now’s your chance to see some extraordinary perfomances in an even more extraordinary setting. Moored on the Thames in Nine Elms, Battersea Barge is an award-winning venue that boasts a bar, restaurant and top-notch entertainment. On the 12th it plays host to a night of burlesque, live music and comedy.

Let’s Rock London
This self-styled ‘Retro Festival’ comes to Clapham common for one night of rock, roll and nostalgia. The line-up features some of the biggest stars of the 80s: Tony Hadley, Belinda Carlise and Midge Ure all top this year’s bill. Go all-out and book yourself a VIP ticket; it gets you into the 80s-themed enclosure where fancy cocktails, fancy dress and fancy toilets await.

Edinburgh Comedy Previews
If you can’t make it to the Edinburgh Festival, these warm-up shows at Battersea Arts Centre are a great alternative. Some of this year’s best acts will be performing over the 12-day run and there’s a double bill almost every night, giving you even more lols for your lolly. Hot tip from the those in the know: don’t miss Mae Martin. She is brilliant.
