What’s on September

Hey September, good to see you! There’s everything from fetes in Clapham to frocks in Chelsea in our count down of the month’s best local events. Read on…

Clapham Village Fete
Good, old-fashioned family fun is the order of the day as Clapham Old Town reverts to life circa 1866, celebrating 150 years of the London Fire Brigade. There’s an egg and spoon race, coconut shy, arts and crafts and a host of furry friends from the Vauxhall City Farm for little ones to pet. A hog roast and live music should keep you going all day.

Totally Thames Putney Party
The Totally Thames festival takes place in London venues throughout September and Putney is one of the first to host this weekend. The highlight is the Great River Race, contested by a 400-strong flotilla, and you can feast on sumptuous street food whilst you watch. There’s plenty for young visitors, including face painting, Punch and Judy, a bouncy castle and a mini funfair. If you’re going with friends, there is still all of these things, plus booze.

Frock Me! Vintage Fashion Fair
Are you in the market for some fancy threads? Then look no further than the Frock Me! Vintage Fashion Fair which is setting up shop in Chelsea Town Hall this September. Since it began in 1990, the fair has served as a mecca for designers, costumiers and serious fashion folk alike and there are hundreds of vintage items on sale.  Drop in to pick up a bargain or spend some time mooching round the beautiful rails.

The Big Fight
We’ve all had those days at work when you could punch someone (we strongly advise against this). For the competitors of White Collar boxing, however, temperance means nothing. These fights pit regular Joe against regular Joseph, giving them ten weeks to train before they must square up in the ring. Teachers fight roofers, car sprayers fight photographers, there are fisticuffs a’plenty and everyone has a jolly good time. Get ringside at the Clapham Grand to see who comes out top.

‘500 Days of Summer’ + Karaoke After Party
Pop Brixton and the Ritzy have collaborated to bring cinema lovers three very special screenings of cult films. On September 15th it’s Marc Webb’s indie rom-com ‘500 Days of Summer’ so settle in and feast on the free popcorn an drinks on offer. If you haven’t seen the movie, it isn’t a spoiler to say that karaoke features, so what better way to round off the evening than having a go yourself.

Beer by the River
Music? Food? Beer? We’re fans of all three here at Le Bureau HQ, so we’ll be heading to Tooting Common for a variety of music acts (and we do mean variety: The Balham Ukelele Band, a Pram Choir and a ‘Human Juke Box’ will all be taking to the stage) plus food and, well, beer. There’s cakes, steaks and everything in between as well as 60 different beers from 25 different breweries to sample. There’s also a competition to win your body weight in the stuff. Take your heaviest friends.

London to Brighton Bike Ride 2016
Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or keen spectator, this two-wheel pilgrimage from London to Brighton is great fun and raises a load of money for cancer research. The 58-mile course starts on Clapham Common, winding its way through pretty suburbs like Mitcham, Carshalton and Haywards Heath before a final descent takes riders to Brighton Pier for a picturesque finish. Spaces are limited which makes for a more pleasant ride but it does mean you’ll have to hurry to bag your place – register here.

Brompton Design District
The London Design Festival offers creative Londoners a chance to discover cutting edge art and design. Events, exhibitions and pop-ups are taking place across the capital from the 17th and in South Kensington, the Brompton Design District has some of the best stuff going on. This year marks their 10th anniversary and Le Bureau’s own Michelle Noel has worked with the brand to create stunning visuals. Don’t miss.

Singles Games Night @ The Jam Tree
Are you single and ready to mingle, but dread the idea of making small talk with a stranger? The speed dating nights at Clapham’s Jam Tree pit you against potential paramours in all manner of silly games and activities so you can play instead of chat. Couples at this event have been known to build lego together, doodle or play a board game, all in the name of love, so get you game face on.

The Owl and the Pussycat’s Treasury of Nonsence
Soap Soup Theatre have come up trumps with their wacky, zany children’s show, coming to the Clapham Omnibus as part of a wider tour. The show combines clowning, music and puppetry to tell the story of the Owl and the Pussycat, two friends who turn their stories into wild and wonderful adventures. You’ll love it as much as your kids do.
