From Wimbledon to Battersea (and beyond)

It has been a tennis-tastic week here at Le Bureau. Our Battersea workspace is located just up the road from the prestigious Wimbledon ground – not quite so close that we can hear the cheers and smell the strawberries – but close enough for members with a free afternoon to nip off for some court-side action.

Whilst queuing is an institution as British as lawn tennis itself, going to Wimbledon in the afternoon means no waiting around. Le Bu members reported that they walked straight in and bagged ace seats (sorry) on Centre Court.

Many of us, however, could not swap our hot desks for the hot sunshine of central Wimbledon. To remedy this, our brilliant office managers Kinga, Magda and Valeria, decided to bring a taste of Wimbledon to us.

Instead of our usual Friday fare (cake, cheese, the rosemary cracker things that have become an office obsession) we arrived at the Members’ Lounge to find a sumptuous spread of vibrant strawberries, clotted cream and a towering Kilner jar of Pimms on a table decorated in the purple and green livery of Wimbledon .

What else? How else can you celebrate one of the world’s best tennis tournaments than with strawberries and cream? The Pimms, another summertime staple, was received gratefully (very gratefully…) at the end of a long week for many members.

Despite being a hot desking workspace, we were all united behind Murray in his extraordinary Quarter Final match against Jo Wilfried Tsonga on Thursday. After a dispiriting start, Tsonga rallied to take the third and fourth sets and push the match to a gruelling fifth. But a defiant Murray thrashed the Frenchmen  and took a decisive  victory. On the same night that Wales crashed out of Euro 2016, he was supported by a home crowd that was desperate for at least one sporting victory.

Pimms: a summertime tradition

Now we wait with baited breath for the outcome of Murray’s semi against Tomas Berdych. A Murray/Federer final would be a thrill for tennis fans (and countless non-tennis fans alike) – and with Federer nearing the end of his phenomenal career, he would be a popular champion if Murray doesn’t lift the trophy.

In the meantime, here in Battersea we shall be raising a glass to sporting chances, strawberries and cream and all the trappings of the great British summer.

Cheers!
